French Game Websites
From LoveToKnow French
Whether you are a teacher looking for fun learning French games, or a college student majoring in French looking for a different gaming site than the old standards, French game websites have a lot to offer.
Every year, more and more websites are available. The question then becomes: which sites are worth my (or my students') time? The following resources have been hand-picked to help you on your way to finding the best options for French game websites, regardless of which type of game site you are looking to use.
Teachers and Students
Learning a foreign language includes a lot of hard work! Those irregular verbs do have to be memorized; however, there are lots of aspects of learning French that can be made really fun, such as learning new vocabulary through word searches or practicing French numbers by playing Bingo. Some of these activities are best kept inside the classroom; however, the websites now available for such types of learning games make it possible for students to practice these skills at home. Of course, they can also study at home, memorizing translations from English to French, but not only are games more fun, the information is more likely to sink in, and stick.
Popular Websites
These websites offer countless games and activities that can be used in and outside the classroom. Teachers can choose specific games their students should play, or teachers of younger children can enlist parental support in having their kids visit one of the child-friendly sites below (Hello World is a good one) twice a week for 20 minutes to a half hour each time.
- Quia: Offering thousands of free, fun, French learning activities perfect for teachers to have their students do. In addition, teachers can make their own activities if an activity that's just right for the unit you're working on doesn't exist.
- Hello World: Excellent selection of games and listening activities that show the text in French while the audio is playing. Some elements of the website require a subscription for access; however, most of the activities are available for free, and a subscription can be obtained free of charge by placing a link to Hello World on your own website.
- Transparent Games: Word Searches and more for common vocabulary reinforcement
- Transparent Quizzes: Quizzes both to reinforce what students know and to find out what it is that they have already learned, and what needs to be gone over again.
General French Game Websites
For the more advanced speaker of French, general game websites are a good option for bringing the French language into one's everyday life. Exposure to French is very important to continued growth in French proficiency, as well as to increasing one's fluency in the language. Playing games online includes reading instructions, navigating websites, and chatting with other players in multi-player games, all in French. This exposes the advanced student to an authentic French vocabulary, including slang and abbreviations (for example c'est is simply written c in chat rooms, and on message boards). Exposure to this kind of French is ideal for college students and adults who have already acquired an intermediate to advanced vocabulary and have mastered the grammar to a considerable degree.
- Ze Best: A vast selection of single and multiplayer games ranging from traditional card games to sport and adventure games. For the advanced French speaker, try the category Jeux de lettres.
- Todoo Flash: Start with the Jeux d'enfants to ease yourself in gently
- 1980 Games: For the lifelong gamer, play your old favorites, like PacMan and Tetris, or try your hand at newer games you didn't play in the 80's or 90's.
All these options make the internet not only a fun place to learn, but also a great place to be exposed to the French language.
