Two Schools of Thought

Memorization

When it comes to learning French, you can tackle the task at hand with one of two methods. One way is to simply memorize sentences and common phrases. This may sound fairly easy, and for the most part, it is, if you happen to have a stellar memory. The only caveat is that you’ll have to be able to understand the context behind those sentences.

This way, you’ll be able to know which sentence to use and in which situation to use it. Perhaps the very best way to go about using this method is to first breakdown different scenarios where one needs to ask certain things. These scenarios can include:

For example, learning to ask how much something costs, or how to order something may prove particularly helpful. This method is a good one to use if your interest in French coincides with a trip. Learning simple phrases will never produce a fluent speaker but it can get you through a couple of weeks in France!

Try the Grammar Method

The second way of learning is to actually study the grammatically correct way to put together a sentences in French. This is the traditional way of learning French, and many people eschew it as not having practical application. With that said, if your goal is to speak the language fluently, you cannot really get away from studying grammar.
